Smartphones between 150 and 200 euros – Round-up

  • Nokia G21
  • Motorola Moto G31
  • Samsung Galaxy A13
  • Redmi Note 11

Summarized

The Nokia G21 is a beautiful no-nonsense device. The Android One software is clean and long supported. In addition, the device charges quickly and lasts a long time on one charge. The camera is unfortunately a weak point of this smartphone.

Summarized

The Motorola G31 is a sturdy device with a very good screen. In addition, the software is clean, smooth and fast. The gestures are always a welcome addition. The smartphone also performs well and takes reasonable photos. Unfortunately, at two years, software support is on the short side, even at this price point. Support will run until November 2023.

Summarized

The Samsung Galaxy A13 is a sturdy smartphone, but unfortunately it is not that powerful. For the same money, you can find faster smartphones that are compatible with heavier games. On the other hand, the cameras perform better than those of other smartphones in this price category and you have excellent software support.

Summarized

The Redmi Note 11 is a powerful smartphone for its price. The device is equipped with a strong mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 680. In addition, the 3.5 mm headphone jack, the infrared port and the card tray with space for two SIM cards and a microSD card make it a very complete device. The display is also so good that this smartphone can easily keep up with high-end flagships. The cameras are weak and the smartphone is full of boatware and advertisements. Still, it’s a good smartphone.

Negatives

  • Moderate to poor cameras
  • Lots of bloatware

When talking about low-end or budget smartphones, the average tech fan often turned up his nose. These devices were usually so bad they weren’t worth the trouble. Today, the average smartphone is so powerful that many mid-range and high-end features are slowly making their way to the low-end market. Users who occasionally use the internet, use social media and watch a movie should, in theory, suffice with a low-end smartphone, but is that really the case? We dug into the budget box and put four devices with a price between 150 and 200 euros on the rack.

We have chosen the Samsung Galaxy A13, Motorola Moto G31, Nokia G21 and Redmi Note 11. These devices are available in different versions and we went for the cheapest ones. Motorola sent us the 64GB model of the G31, which currently costs 149 euros. Nokia also brought us the 64GB version of the G21. This one changes owner for 175 euros. The Redmi Note 11 that we put on the rack costs 166 euros at the time of writing and also has 64GB of storage memory on board. The Samsung Galaxy A13 is available in both a 4G and a 5G version and Samsung gave us the 4G version with 64GB storage and an Exynos 850 soc. This smartphone costs 194 euros.

The special thing is that the average smartphone in this price category has more functions and connections on board than the average high-end smartphone. Think of a headphone jack, memory card reader, FM radio and infrared port. That could be a reason for many people to choose such devices. Does that automatically mean that the other components are so bad that you have to settle for bad screens, abominable batteries, shabby speakers and rickety cameras? It used to be, but whether that is still the case, you will find out in this review.
