Save the life of a woman suffering from a heart attack thanks to the Apple Watch

Little I could imagine Blanca Santos Martincardiologist in her first year of residency at La Princesa hospital in Madrid, who was about to save a woman’s life while enjoying the patronal festivities of Navalacruz.

As reported by ‘El Mundo’, it all started with a phone call from a friend asking for help because her aunt had started having severe chest pains. The cardiologist went home and upon arrival he realized something was wrong. The pain that the woman presented was compatible with a heart attack.

She immediately called the local ambulance, but when the vehicle arrived at the woman’s home, Blanca’s worst omens came true: the ambulance was not equipped with an electrocardiograph, a device used to capture and amplify the electrical activity of the heart through electrodes.

He diagnosed the heart attack with an Apple Watch

Without thinking too much, the cardiologist looked for an alternative to save the patient’s life: the apple watch. His wasn’t the latest model and therefore didn’t have an electrocardiograph, but that of a relative, who happened to be in town in those days, yes.

While the app can’t detect heart attacks, it warns you if your heart rate stays above or below a certain number of beats per minute, thus providing a clear diagnosis.

This is how the doctor observed that the graph indicated that he was facing a heart attack. Subsequently, he asked for the patient to be transferred to the hospital in Salamanca and not in Ávila, which was closer. The reason is that in the center of Salamanca they could open the blocked arterya more effective procedure than intravenous drug administration.

Without imagining it, Blanca ended up saving the life of her friend’s aunt, who recovered after several days in the hospital.
