WWDC 2021 in which Apple shows us the news of its various operating systems for its devices had created particular expectations for one of them: iPadOS had generated a lot of interest for the arrival of the Apple M1 to the latest iPad Pro.
In this event we have known iOS 15, macOS Monterey, watchOS 8 and the arrival of Facetime for Android, but also now we have been able to know the news of iPad 15. This new version of this platform which continues to grow in profits and which is a little closer to macOS although this leaves us for a long time without some of the most requested options among users of these tablets.
Vive les widgets
They came in force and now they are consolidated. Widgets, these visual elements that allow information to be “anchored” on iPad desktops, iPadOS 15 options gain even more.
They do it for example with a new larger format which is perfect, for example, for widgets like Apple TV + or Files, which now allows us to always have at hand files that we want to have much more accessible.
The organization of these offices that allow us to also distribute the applications that we have installed earn lots of integers with the new app library, which allows you to categorize and group them.
This means that we can therefore delete or move desks from iPad now that we have the apps in one of those groups.
Multitasking supervitamin
Another important change was done in multitasking. In iPadOS 15 we have a new control which is at the top to select a split screen or window to overlap others. Gestures allow us to wield these options in order to place the advantages that best suit us in each situation.
In Mail messages we can have a message to open and keep it in the foreground above the mailbox and for example the notes app. In addition we have the “shelf” in which we can see all the open applications.
The different instances of Safari can appear as separate windows, and all of this is aimed at making us more productive on the iPad.
By the way: if you use a keyboard connected to the iPad, we also have new keyboard shortcuts —Which are added to touch gestures— to make these options work faster.
What’s new in the Notes app and translation too
The Notes app is also improving. We can cite users in traditional format with the sign (@user), also a history of activity in collaborative documents for know who changed what, and we will also have the possibility to add notes.
The Quick Note option will allow quickly get a note no matter where we are on the iPad.
For example, we can write a note with the Pencil (a phone) then go back to Safari, see something that interests us, add another note, then manage them so that apps recognize which notes are the ones they were wearing on the app we wanted to create them from.
It’s possible add links automatically and they are also compatible with third party applications. To switch from one to the other, just slide them from left to right.
Translation functions gain integers and now allow with Auto Translate detect when someone is speaking and that this option translates what is said in another language.
We can select text in any application and have it translated by this feature, even if it is, for example, part of an image.
Program on the iPad, you don’t need more
At Apple, they wanted improve the use of Swift Playgrounds. This platform allows you to create applications directly on the iPad, and the code is instantly reflected in the application.
We’ll be able to access the entire component library and also a guide that will help us to create our first app and then upload it to the App Store in an easy way.
These developments make the iPad an interesting development machine that makes this function much more autonomous on Apple tablets, and it will certainly be easy to both develop these apps and games and test them (and even distribute them on the App Store) quickly and easily.
Lots of (small) new features, but few responses to user requests
These improvements are joined by many of those already presented in iOS 15 such as the Focus modes, hot new features in FaceTime, SharePlay, improvements to photo search in Spotlight, support for improvements in audio and video reproduction or the timeliness of notifications.
Some of the Safari improvements in macOS Monterey are also inherited, such as the eyelash or extension support groups, which ultimately reaches both this platform and iOS 15. Other improvements such as Universal control or shared with you that extend to iOS and macOS are also part of this new version of iPadOS.
While versatility is one of the goals of iPadOS 15, which High demand topics such as multi-user support are being forgotten again or the support of more ambitious applications which were already in macOS (Final Cut Pro X, Logic) and which with the M1 chips seem to make more sense than ever in the iPad.
There also doesn’t seem to be any news at the moment that takes advantage of the powerful M1 chips in the new iPad Pro. There was talk of better support for external displays or improvements in files., but at the moment it doesn’t look like the iPadOS 15 is the version that will provide an answer to these user demands.
IPadOS 15 availability
The new operating system for Apple tablets is available in private beta for developers starting today, and the public beta will be offered next July so that any Apple device user who wants to can try iPadOS 15.
Apple further indicated that the final and fully stable version of iPadOS 15 will arrive in the fall, without specifying a precise date. The new version is available with different models and generations of these tablets as shown in the picture.
