Twenty years have just passed since the death of the unforgettable Czech actress Slávka Budínová, who lived to be 78 years old. She died a multi-millionaire, but childless and abandoned. She dealt with adversity with alcohol. What made her unhappy?
Actress Slávka Budínová was born in Ostrava. Her father wanted her to be a doctor, her mother, who worked in a volunteer group, and an actress. She didn’t resist anything and left what she would do one day to fate. After elementary school, she began attending a business academy, but had to interrupt her studies due to the raging World War II.
She was saved from forced labor in Germany by the actress of the Ostrava Theater Marie Rýdlová, who arranged for her to work as a theater student. Thanks to this, Slávka was able to devote herself fully to acting. She performed not only in drama, but also in ballet, opera or operetta. After the war, she joined the theater in Pardubice, from where she moved to Olomouc, where she spent ten years. In the theater there, she created an unforgettable tandem with Josef Bek.

She was expecting a child with Höger, and married for the first time at fifty-three
When she became famous and became a star, she didn’t enjoy a very good reputation in the industry. Countless stories circulated about her. How condescending she was to the costume designers, and as soon as it wasn’t hers, she started throwing her clothes around. It is said that she sometimes behaved a bit domineeringly towards others, she was moody, and when she was not having a day, she was able to scold anyone. “Flawless actress, as a female somewhat complex personality. Sometimes she could be a millionaire, like sunshine, but the very next day she was completely different, even unpleasant. It depended on how she slept. But I always liked to see her and I liked to work with her,” actor Jan Skopeček, who met Budínová, for example, during the filming of the film Summer with a Cowboy, where they played a married couple, told the editor of the Prima Ženy website about her.
Slávka Budínová was not lucky in her partner life. It was an open secret that she was having an affair with a married colleague, Karl Höger. In the seventies, she came to a different state with him, but had the child taken away. She never got pregnant after that.

She married for the first time at the age of fifty-three, to the director and screenwriter Ivo Toman. They married in 1977 during the filming of In the Sign of the Turquoise Mountain in distant Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Their marriage was idyllic. It’s like they’ve known each other all their lives. They had common hobbies, they loved dogs, collected antiques and liked to go to the forest for mushrooms. The actress was perhaps truly happy in love for the first time in her life. Happiness lasted seventeen years. Just one day before Christmas Day 1994, Ivo died and Slava’s whole world collapsed. She fell into alcohol and theater and work became unimportant to her. She went to the performance unprepared, sometimes under the influence and sometimes without an apology she did not arrive at all. There was a steep fall. Directors were afraid to cast her because of her unreliability.

Unexpected decision three days before death
On top of everything, the actress’s health worsened. She underwent an oncological operation and suffered from a sick heart. She felt that the end was near and looked forward to death. She took it as a release from a world she no longer wanted to be in. Three days before she took her last breath, she made a surprising move. She called the priest and asked him to baptize her. In addition, she signed a will in which she did not leave all her property, estimated at almost 100 million crowns, to her distant relatives, but bequeathed it to the antiquarian Rudolf Příhod, with whom she became friends at the end of her life. It was not only a house on the most lucrative plot in Prague, but also very valuable paintings and jewelry that she owned.

She ordered bottles of alcohol from the confectionery
The end of her life was very sad and painful for her. “When Ivo Toman, whom she adored and was completely dependent on, died, something broke in her. We went to Mrs. Slávka three times a week, we gave her infusions and injections. She solved the feeling of loneliness by drinking. First it was red wine, then champagne, and finally champagne mixed with cognac. She told me that they drink it in France, that it’s more of a medicine,” her attending physician, Blanka Seifertová, confided to the Blesk newspaper years ago.
Out of the entire vast house, Budínová used only one room, from which she never left. She refused to go to the hospital because she knew she wouldn’t get alcohol there. “When she could no longer walk, she used to order drinks by phone from the pastry shop across the street. They brought her a bottle from there,” added the doctor.
In 2002, two weeks after she died of exhaustion, a flood came and flooded her entire house.
