After a number of action films, Will Smith takes the serious route again with the lead role in the slavery thriller Emancipation by director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Magnificent Seven). The announced film now arouses considerable interest among the major studios during the Cannes film market due to its subject.
In the film we will see Smith as the historical character Peter, a slave who managed to flee from the racist South of the United States and secured a place in the army in the North in order to fight for the freedom of his people.
Warner Bros. and Apple is said to have pushed the film’s rights rights fight to the tune of about $ 130 million last week during the so-called Virtual Cannes Market. This would mean a sales record for Cannes, according to Deadline. Now we have to wait and see who will actually pay the main prize for the film.
