sixth epidemiological point Grand Est

Four days after the start of the deconfinement, the “Special epidemic point Covid-19” for the Grand Est region draws up a new inventory of the epidemic situation at regional and departmental level: the circulation of the virus slows sharply.

Great East situation

Public health France, in collaboration with its partners (ARS Grand Est, university and general hospitals, SOS Doctors associations, doctors of the Sentinelles network, medical biology laboratories in hospitals and cities and learned societies), today publishes its sixth detailed point on the covid-19 epidemic at regional and departmental level in Grand Est. The document is attached to this press release.

Downward indicators

Four days after the start of deconfinement, the “Special epidemic point Covid-19” for the Grand Est region draws up a new inventory of the epidemic situation at regional and departmental level. Since week 13-2020 (March 23-29), week of the peak of the epidemic in the region, the circulation of the virus has considerably slowed down in particular under the effect of the measures of containment and social distancing implemented successively from March 9 in the Haut-Rhin and from March 17 in all other departments.
In the week 19-2020 (04-10 May) and on the first days of the week 20-2020, all epidemiological indicators are oriented downward, in town medicine and in health establishments.
The 5 SOS Doctors associations in the region thus recorded 224 consultations for suspected Covid-19 in the week 19-2020, which represents 5.8% of their total activity, a decrease of 11% and 0.9 points respectively. compared to the previous week. The severity of the cases remains stable: 8.5% of these consultations led to hospitalization, this proportion having hardly changed since the start of the epidemic.

The virus still present

At the same time, the emergency services of the region recorded 529 passages for suspected Covid-19 in the week 19-2020, which represents 3% of the total activity of these services (against 686 passages and 5% of total activity the previous week), a respective decrease of -23% and 2 points compared to the previous week. The proportion of these emergency visits to Covid-19 that led to hospitalization; decreased from 50% to 43%.
Despite this decrease, Covid-19 activity in emergency services remains high and comparable to that observed the week following the peak of the seasonal flu 2019-2020. In some departments, the decline is less significant than in previous weeks, or even we observe a stability, both for associations
SOS Doctors (Aube, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Haut-Rhin, Bas-Rhin) than for emergency services (Haute-Marne, Meuse, Moselle). These two findings point out that the virus is still present in the region and that strict compliance with barrier gestures and distancing measures remains an absolute necessity to prevent a resumption of the epidemic. The other hospital indicators (hospitalizations for Covid-19, admissions to intensive care or intensive care) are decreasing. As of March 13, 3,170 people are still hospitalized in hospitals in the region (including 278 in intensive care or intensive care) and 9,243 have returned to their homes.

No excess mortality

In week 18-2020 (April 27-May 03), and for the first time since week 11-2020 (March 09-15), there is no excess mortality on a regional scale compared to the same period in previous years. As a reminder, the excess mortality reached its maximum in week 14-2020 (March 30-April 5) in the region with an excess mortality of 116%. In week 18-2020, only the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle still has a moderate excess mortality (+ 21.5%).
As of May 13, 2020, 3,191 patients hospitalized for Covid-19 have died in hospitals in the region, 1,707 elderly people have died in medical or non-medical establishments for the elderly (excluding deaths occurring in hospital), as well as 20 residents of social and medico-social establishments other than for the elderly.
