Dince this Tuesday morning, the Reims Criminal Court is judging six defendants suspected of having participated in a series of seven night raids committed in the spring of 2018 in the Reims countryside, as well as in the Epernay vineyards. At the end of the investigation, fifteen burglaries and car thefts were held against the six men aged between 31 and 51 years old, most of them belonging to the midst of the settled nomads of Reims. All dispute the facts, except one – and only novice, patch – who settled for a cautious one: “I don’t want to say anything. I prefer to remain silent. “.
Various and varied flights
During the months of April and May 2018, the joint surveillance of the police and the gendarmerie made it possible to trace the actions of a gang which radiated from Reims with stolen vehicles set on fire after use. Nine raids were attributed to the suspects at the time, but two of the nocturnal journeys were dismissed.
Among the facts judged: the break-in of a cash machine inside the Intermarché store in Pontfaverger (but it was empty); the theft of 96 bottles of alcohol from the Proxi supermarket in Burgundy-Fresne
; a theft of tools in a carpentry Cormontreuil
; the break-in of the car wash Sillery
; the burglary of a champagne house in Fleury-la-Riviere as well as an attempt to Villers-Marmery.
Two years firm required against the alleged “network head”
Cars were sometimes stolen from the victims’ homes (“home-jacking”), Bouzy, Jonchery-sur-Vesle, Rilly-la-Montagne, Tarifières-Mutry, Tours-sur-Marne, Villers-aux-Noeuds, Ville-en-Selve, etc.
Five of the six defendants are already well known to the courts, in particular the one designated as being “The head of the network”, released under judicial supervision after one year in pre-trial detention. The prosecution requested two years in prison against him.
The judgment could be rendered in the course of the afternoon.
