Six Czech Tennis Players Shine in US Open Qualifications

Six Czech representatives presented themselves in the second section of the first round of the US Open qualification. Jakub Menšík and Zdeněk Kolář celebrate advancing to the second round of the qualifiers after great performances. The main competition has to be forgotten by Brenda Fruhvirtová, who was outwitted by the Japanese Uchijimaová, Vít Kopřiva was not enough for home Cressy, Bejlek collected a double canary. Lucie Havlíčková, the last Czech representative, also fought to advance to the second round, but even she was not enough for the Asian sokyna. In the second round, Tomáš Macháč will complete the Czech team, who won his promotion already on Tuesday.

Kolář passed to the 2nd round after a fighting performance
Zdeněk Kolář (176th) defeated Gijs Brouwer (174th) 7:6, 6:4 in the first round of US Open qualification, thus eliminating the defending champion of the second round of the main competition. Kolar only lost serve once in the entire match. He made fifteen break points in the match, but converted only two. During break opportunities, the opponent hit several direct points from the left side, especially to the body, i.e. out of the court. Kolář lost 2:4 in the second set, but double-faulted on a break point and thus started his turnaround. In the tenth game, he broke the serve again with an unforced error by his opponent, this time with his forehand into the net, and then managed to finish the match. Kolář thus equaled his best at the US Open, which he will surpass against the Brazilian Seyboth Wild.

Menšík performed a famous turn in his Grand Slam debut
Jakub Menšík (191) performed an incredible turnaround against Fabio Fognini (140) from Italy in the 1st round of qualifying for the US Open and deservedly advanced to the 2nd round. In the first set, however, it certainly did not look like the progress of the Czech player, Menšík held his serve for the first time only on the third attempt. The debutant at the Grand Slam went to the locker room after the first set and kicked for an incredible turnaround. The young Czech’s serves started to be accurate and mistakes on Fognini’s side started to pay off. The Czech player was also successful during the opponent’s service, scoring four straight breaks in the second and third sets. In addition to all this, he did not lose a single serve and after a certain performance, he finally won in sets 1:6, 6:1 and 6:1. Swiss Leandro Riedi will be waiting for Menšík in the second round.

Brenda Fruhvirtova finishes in US Open qualification
Brenda Fruhvirt’s winning streak (121st) ended at the US Open. The 16-year-old Czech tennis talent, after ten wins and two titles in a row, lost in the first round of qualifying for the final Grand Slam of the season against Mojuca Uchijima (173rd), with whom she fell in sets 1:6, 2:6. The twenty-first seed did not catch the beginning of the match, did not manage the first five games of the match, lost the first set after half an hour of play. The Czech tennis player kept up with the more experienced Japanese player until the middle of the second set, and due to two more lost serves, she was already out of qualification at the premiere in New York.

Havlíčková was stopped by her Korean opponent
Lucie Havlíčková (223rd) did not enter the match ideally, she lost the first set clearly 6:1. From the second set, the young Czech player equalized the tempo of the game with her opponent, but too many unforced errors made it easier for the Korean Su Jeong Jang (152nd) and finally the final tiebreak of the second set, in which she confirmed her progress to the 2nd round of qualification.

Bejlek collected a double canary
Ja-fan Wang (115th) from China, who has been playing in famous form in recent weeks, did not give last year’s successful qualifier Sára Bejlek (213th) the slightest chance to repeat the success of last year’s great ride. Bejlek spent just 54 minutes on the court, and after the sets 6:0, 6:0, the US Open in 2023 ends for her already in the 1st round of qualification.
