Singapore Detains Student Allegedly Involved with ISIS

Singapore

Singapore detained an 18-year-old man suspected of supporting the Islamic State group. The man named Muhammad Irfan Danyal bin Mohamad Nor is suspected of wanting to carry out an attack in the country.

Reported AFPWednesday (1/2/2023), Irfan who is a Singaporean student was detained in December under the Homeland Security Act which allows detention without trial for up to 2 years.

The student is said to have become radicalized after seeing the propaganda of the ISIS group online. Singaporean authorities also said the man wanted to use social media to rally fighters and carry out attacks in Singapore.

Authorities said the plan included recruiting a suicide car bomber to attack a military camp as well as bombing a grave site.

“When he was arrested, he was determined to commit violence,” said Home and Justice Minister K Shanmugam.

Such cases are rare in a multicultural and multiracial city-state. In 2020, authorities arrested a 16-year-old who planned to attack two mosques in Singapore after being influenced by the massacre of Muslim congregations in New Zealand.

The following year, a 20-year-old Singaporean was arrested under the same law that authorities accused him of plotting to kill a Jew in a synagogue.
