Sima’s Controversial Statement: Is Sparta the Biggest Club in the Czech Republic?

He became a hit in Slavia and was bounced from it to engage in prestigious Western European leagues. The fans of the red and white team were therefore shocked when the Senegalese footballer Abdallah Sima allegedly declared that the biggest club in the Czech Republic is the rival from Sparta. The 22-year-old attacker then had to put everything into perspective.

“Sparta is the biggest club in the Czech Republic.” This sentence was supposed to be uttered by Sima in an interview with the Scottish newspaper Daily Record before Thursday’s Europa League duel, for which he will come to Letná in Prague with his current team, Glasgow Rangers.

The statement on the website of the Scottish newspaper, which was also taken over by the Czech media, caused an uproar. Even the Senegalese himself realized this. And in communication with Zdenek Houštecký, assistant coach of Slavia Jindřich Trpišovský, he clarified everything.

This is evidenced by a text conversation that Jakub Splavec, Slavia’s director of strategic communication, published on the social network X, formerly Twitter, with the consent of both.

According to Splavek, the attacker also contacted his other acquaintances from the Vršovice club. “During his time here, he developed a close relationship not only with Houšťov, but also with other people from Slavia, to whom he immediately wrote,” declared the team official from Eden.

Splavec also said that Sima himself asked his club and the Scottish media for correction.

On the Daily Record website during Monday actually discovered the edited articlein which Sparta is already described in Sim’s direct speech as “a big club in the Czech Republic.”

Sima spent two years in Slavia, scored 11 goals in 24 league matches and won the championship with them. He transferred to Brighton in the summer of 2021, had loan spells at Stoke, Angers in France and has been at the Scottish club since this summer.

Even without the latest controversy, Glasgow Rangers’ trip to Prague will be a closely watched match.

The events surrounding the rematch of the round of 16 of the Europa League in the spring of 2021, when Scottish club midfielder Glen Kamara accused Sim’s then-teammate Ondřej Kúdela of racism, are vividly remembered.

Even Sparta’s double match with Rangers in the Europa League in autumn 2021 was accompanied by passions. After the match in Prague, coach Steven Gerrard criticized the children’s booing of Kamara, who was sent off.

The Scottish side was not willing to understand that the Finnish midfielder caused negative emotions not by the color of his skin, but by his behavior (not only) on the field. Top officials and politicians intervened in the case.
