Silvia Bardales: From “Risas y Salsa” to “Luz de Esperanza”, the unexpected journey of a passionate actress

Every time she faces a new television challenge in her acting career, Silvia Bardales remembers her beginnings in “Risas y Salsa”, when the great Jesús Morales scolded her after hearing her complain that they would remove her from the dance team to give her a chance in the performance. “Why are you crying, thank God, how long do you think the dance will last?” the veteran artist said energetically to a young girl Silvia, whom we see today in “Luz de Esperanza” as Guillermina. “I never imagined that I would make a living as an actress. I wanted to be a psychologist, but it didn’t happen, it wasn’t possible and I studied secretarial work, computing, public relations, but I never thought about being an artist,” says Bardales.

How do you enter Panamericana?

I took my dance classes since I was a girl and came to Panamericana through the choreographer Armando Barrientos, I was studying at his academy, and he took me to the channel as a dancer, I was there for a year and a half until I started acting. What was a hobby for me ended up being my life, my passion.

You learned on the court, surrounded by great actors

I think that I was presented with that opportunity to work with them and learn with that group that was, well, a whole school, they were theater actors. I remember clearly, when they told me: let’s rehearse, and I would go into the bathroom and review what I had to say, it was a great responsibility, what a shame to make a mistake, right?

And now you apply that same routine with the young actors who accompany you.

Of course, just the same, when we rehearse, I welcome them the same, I’m not afraid, I ask them to be attentive. When you work you work, when you rest you rest, but right now we are going to work, so you have to know the lyrics well, just as they have taught me. As Guillermo Guille told me in ‘Risas y Salsa’, when you have to fuck, you fuck, when you have to work, you work.

Your career reaffirms that art is about resistance, with each character you start over, you don’t have to believe it.

I started as a child and I have never believed it, I have always continued working. This race always surprises me with each character that comes my way, that’s when you realize that you haven’t done anything.

Actress considers that soap operas are in very good health and popularity.

You have played comic characters, you have done theater, novels, you have always faced challenges.

I have always said yes to what was presented to me, because everything is supposed to be a challenge in this life, so why are you in this career if you are going to say no, I don’t like it.

By the way, there are people who do not look favorably on actors who participate in comedy shows.

For years they didn’t look at us comedians, those of us who were the funny ones, they looked down on us, but then they realized that no, we had more work than them. Once when I was at Panamericana, I said, I want to do a soap opera, and Mr. Alberto Terry (director of Panamericana) sent me to say: hey, tell that little girl Bardales, literally, to continue with the comedy because with the comedy she is going to live all your life. Of course, because soap operas last four, or at most six months.

Despite the platforms, soap operas are still valid, they have a captive audience.

I think we have to keep rowing, rowing forward, even if there is Netflix or other options that you can access, people love their people, they want their national soap opera, they have fun. Yesterday I went to the market, I went to buy things, and a woman told me, are you okay? Yes, I’m fine, I told him. What, they didn’t give you the injection, no, I told him, they didn’t give me the injection. Everyone is paying attention to what happens to Guillermina, what is going to happen. Or they come and ask me, what is going to happen, but I can’t tell anything. This shows that the soap opera is in people’s hearts.
