Significantly slower driving below the speed limit is not a big problem, police admit – Apollo.lv – Auto – Apollo.lv – iTech

The head of the safe driving school Jānis Vanks this week “RīgaTV 24” admitted in the program “Uz līnijas” that the so-called slow drivers, who move significantly below the allowed driving speed, are a big problem on Latvian roads.

According to him, it is necessary to look at the root of why such drivers exist, namely, because there is a possibility that it is associated with significant human health problems, such as poor vision.

“If it’s a health issue, then it’s a doctor’s question, maybe you need to get drivers to check their medical condition more often. If it’s ignorance, then think about how to educate these drivers. Slow driving is a very important problem that causes stress to other drivers. and leads to unnecessary overtaking, “admitted Vanks.

The Public Relations Division of the State Police explained to LETA that, according to police observations, driving below the permitted speed is a more seasonal problem, when after the winter season, drivers who drive only in the warm season return to traffic.

There is no statutory liability for such driving.

“Understandably, too slow drivers tend to cause traffic congestion by increasing aggression and speeding or rapid maneuvering in others, but such situations cannot be assessed unequivocally without knowing the reasons for driving slowly because its driver feels safe or doing other things in parallel, “There may be another problem. It is possible that the particular driver is not aware that his driving style may disturb other road users,” said VP.

However, the LP reminded that all road users must be careful and responsible on the road, including choosing a speed that does not violate traffic rules or disturb others.

In cases when the State Police detects a driver driving too slowly, the response is to find out the reasons for such a driving style. However, the police do not collect information on how many such drivers have been identified, as no liability is provided for such driving style.

The police emphasized that a big problem in Latvia is drivers who use smart devices while driving, as well as violators of the permitted driving speed.
