Before this, the United States had a post of President of the Continental Congress (since 1774), but its powers were more like those of a modern Speaker. New powers and a new election procedure were prescribed in the US Constitution, approved on September 17, 1787. It was there that they described the mechanism of “selecting electors”, unusual for most democratic countries, who then cast votes for the president. Only ten of the 13 states that existed at that time participated in the first elections (North Carolina and Rhode Island had not yet ratified the constitution, and New York had not yet passed the relevant laws). 69 people voted for Washington. And he received all 69 votes, so he remains the only president in US history to be elected unanimously. Moreover, each of the electors had two votes – the second was distributed among the other candidates to determine the vice president. John Adams became the winner with 34 votes. Having assumed the presidency, Washington tried to refuse a salary (just as he had not taken money before when he was commander-in-chief of the US Army). But Congress still gave him a salary of $25,000 a year to correct the difficult financial situation in which Washington was at that time. He was elected President of the United States twice – again in 1792. Washington led the country until 1797. Adams succeeded him.

February 4, 1859 is considered the date when the Codex Sinaiticus was discovered – a copy of the Bible in Greek with an incomplete text of the Old Testament and the complete text of the New Testament.

The German researcher Konstantin Tischendorf found an ancient document. Actually, he first encountered the Codex Sinaiticus back in 1844, but could not study it completely. The researcher returned several times to the Sinai Peninsula – to the monastery of St. Catherine, in whose library he found the document. He tried to obtain from the monks the right to study the code. And Tischendorf still succeeded on February 4, 1859. Codex Sinaiticus is now considered the oldest uncial parchment manuscript of the Bible. The code was written in the 4th century.

In recent days, the only center of resistance remained the Arsenal plant, from which the rebellion began. The plant was stormed by troops under the command of Symon Petlyura. Subsequently, Soviet propaganda spread the fake story about the execution of 300 of its defenders in the courtyard of the plant, but eyewitnesses testified that there was no mass execution. Despite the suppression of the rebellion, he achieved his goal – he pulled the UPR troops away from the front and created the illusion of “popular support” for the Bolsheviks. Already on this day, the Russian occupiers captured the bridges across the Dnieper, and the next day they began to storm Pechersk.

February 4, 1945 The Yalta Conference opened in Crimea, at which the leaders of the USA, Great Britain and the USSR met – Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin. The subject of discussion was the end of the Second World War and the post-war world order. Read more.

February 4, 1970 The city of Pripyat was founded. Its construction began simultaneously with the construction of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which is located two kilometers from Pripyat. The project assumed that the city’s population would be 75–78 thousand people. As of 1986, when the Chernobyl accident occurred, more than 45 thousand people lived in the city. All residents of Pripyat were evacuated from the city due to radiation contamination. After the Chernobyl accident, only 5 thousand people remained here to carry out urgent work. Now Pripyat is a ghost town.
