Shootings Leave Three Dead in New York – NBC New York

NEW YORK – Gun violence once again rocked New York City on Wednesday night, with three people killed in three incidents in less than 45 minutes.

All three deaths occurred in or around cars, although the incidents were apparently unconnected.

For the year to July 3, NYPD data says murders are actually down 10 percent this year from the same period in 2021, though near the highest levels in a decade. But the last few days have brought another wave of bloodshed to the city, with more than two dozen people shot in the last three days.

The first fatal incident occurred at 10:56 p.m. Wednesday at Classon Avenue and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. Police said a Jeep Cherokee was stopped at a red light when an unknown gunman pulled up on a bicycle and began shooting at the passenger side of the car, hitting a 37-year-old man in the chest and leg. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he died.

But that wasn’t the only drive-by shooting of the night. At 11:37 a.m., police responded to a report of shots fired on Sutphin Boulevard in Queens and found a 32-year-old man in the back seat of a car shot in the neck and chest. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he died. Another man, 28, later arrived at the same hospital and said he, too, had been shot in the car.

While that was unfolding, there was another car-related murder. At 11:39 in the Bronx, officers responded to a 911 call at East Gun Hill Road and Seymour Avenue and found a man, 30, inside a car with multiple stab wounds; he died on the spot. Police say he got into a fight with another man, was stabbed, then got into the car and tried to drive away before succumbing.
