The wave of violence continues in California. In one week there have been two mass shootings in the Golden State. This Monday, a shooting in Half Moon Bay claimed the lives of seven people. The police have arrested the suspect.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office reported the shooting Monday afternoon through its Twitter account. “The Sheriff’s Office is responding to a mass shooting in the area of HWY 92 and the HMB city limits. Media are requested to approach from the north and report to the Half Moon Bay Substation at 537 Kelly Ave. in Half Moon Bay,” authorities noted.
Later, the office shared that the suspect had been detained and that there was no continuing threat to the community at the time.
Authorities arrest shooter
San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said the suspected shooter was arrested after seven people were shot to death near the small city south of San Francisco, it reported. NBC News.
The victims were found on the outskirts of Half Moon Bay, a coastal city of approximately 11,000 inhabitants. An eighth victim was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries to her, Corpus added. The suspected shooter was identified as 67-year-old Zhao Chunli.
Although the exact reason is unknown, all the victims were Chinese farm workers, City Councilwoman Debbie Ruddock told NBC Bay Area.
California adds a second shooting in three days
This tragedy marks the second mass shooting in California in less than a week. On the night of January 21, a mass shooting took place in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles. The incident occurred during the Chinese New Year celebration.
The County Sheriff’s Office reported at the time that at least ten people lost their lives, while ten others were injured. However, this Monday one more victim died in hospital.
Later, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna reported that the shooting suspect was identified. The man, Huu Can Tran, 72, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. in a white pickup truck, which was found in Torrance, Luna said (via AP).
