In Colorado, a four-year-old child died from the flu after his mother refused to give him the vaccine prescribed by his doctor, NBC News reported Friday. She is said to have followed the advice of an anti-vaccine group on Facebook.

A four-year-old boy died from the flu this week after his mother refused to administer the antiviral drug Tamiflu prescribed by his doctor on the advice of anti-vaccines, reports NBC News.

According to the media, the mother had contacted the Facebook group “Stop Mandatory Vaccination” during the week. She explained that the flu had not yet been diagnosed, but that her child was feeling feverish. Before adding that two other of his children had been diagnosed with influenza, and that the doctor had prescribed antiviral Tamiflu to all members of the household.

“The doc prescribed Tamiflu, but I didn’t go to get it,” she concluded.

Choice in favor of natural remedies

According to NBC News, 45 comments were left under the mother’s Facebook post, but none suggested medical care. Several Internet users have proposed natural remedies, such as breast milk, thyme or elderberry. The mother herself said that she treated her sick children with peppermint essential oil, vitamin and lavender, without success.

The child ended up in hospital but died four days later, officials in a GoFundMe fundraiser launched on his behalf said.

Facebook insisted on speaking out about the case in a statement:

“It is a tragedy and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. We don’t want vaccine disinformation on Facebook, which is why we’re working hard to reduce it everywhere on the platform, including in private groups. ”

According to the Wall Street Journal, there have been 19 million cases of influenza this season in the United States, resulting in 10,000 deaths.
