Sharp Increase in Chilli Price in North Gorontalo – Impact of Hot Season on Supply and Demand

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, GORONTALO — Price chilli Rawit in North Gorontalo Regency, Gorontalo Province experienced a sharp increase and reached IDR 100 thousand per kilogram.

“Previously, the price of cayenne pepper reached Rp. 80 thousand to Rp. 85 thousand per kilo gram. However, now it has risen sharply to Rp. 100 thousand per kilogram,” said cayenne pepper trader Saipul (47) in North Gorontalo, Saturday (14/10/ 2023).

He said that the stock of cayenne pepper was reduced because summer which is still prevalent today. Traders predict an increase chili price cayenne can continue to occur until the beginning of the year if the summer continues.

“There are still buyers, it even seems stable even though prices have risen sharply. Because Gorontalo people are known to like spicy food,” he said.

Head of the North Gorontalo Trade, Industry and SME Cooperative Service, Grace Mangosa, said that the price of cayenne pepper at the farmer level had indeed increased due to reduced stocks. Farmers even experienced crop failure due to the ongoing hot season.

This also has a big impact on the harvest. This condition creates chili supply in the market is decreasing.

“Demand that remains high certainly affects the market price because the price increase will not be stopped if there is less stock,” he said.

He said the regional government would immediately implement a cheap market to control food commodity prices. “Sunday morning (15/10/2023) we will hold a cheap market, including at the Kwandang Subdistrict Office,” he said.
