Shaken by political turmoil, the Malaysian PM will implement a national emergency

KUALA LUMPUR, KOMPAS.com – Prime Minister Malaysia Muhyiddin Yassin | reported by various local media will declare a state of emergency or state of emergency This Friday night (23/10/2020).

The decision to declare a state of emergency was approved by the cabinet which held an emergency hearing this morning, according to reports The Malaysian Insight. Muhyiddin | himself is currently having an affair with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah | at Istana Abdulaziz in Kuantan, Pahang.

The 73-year-old Prime Minister will present a proposal for an emergency declaration plan as well as a freeze or dissolution of the cabinet to Sultan Abdullah.

A state of emergency will give Muhyiddin unlimited powers to govern, by decree under which he does not need parliamentary approval to execute his policies.

Another possibility is that Sultan Abdullah took power and ruled with instructions from the emergency cabinet. The final decision is in the hands of the 61-year-old King.

So far it is not clear what form of emergency will take place.
The Star said the economy will continue to spin as usual and there are no plans to implement a curfew.

The Straits Times called a state of emergency to ensure the state budget for 2021 does not run into hurdles in parliament, where Muhyiddin controls only a very slim majority of 113 out of 222 parliamentary seats.
