Seventeen American missionaries and their families kidnapped in Haiti

The kidnapping happened in the capital Port-au-Prince yesterday, according to the newspaper, after the families visited an orphanage. The newspaper relies on information from local officials.

On the way to the airport

The families were on a bus to the airport to take some of the members away, after which they would drive on to another destination in Haiti.

Official sources are yet to confirm the news. A spokesman for the US State Department told Reuters news agency that the department is looking into it, and the US embassy in Haiti is not responding to questions. The police in Haiti say they are working on it.

Gang violence

It is not known who the missionaries are and where they come from. It is still unclear who the perpetrators are.

There is a lot of gang violence in poverty-stricken Haiti, especially since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July and an earthquake in August, which killed more than 2000 people. It is estimated that gangs control more than half of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
