Seven Cholera Pandemics and Still Haunting the World

Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection that has killed thousands of sufferers worldwide. Cholera infects someone who eats food or water contaminated with the bacteria Vibrio cholerae. These bacteria are usually found in water contaminated with faeces.

Sufferers will experience dehydration due to rapid loss of body fluids. This disease can be fatal if the patient is not treated. From the beginning of the 19th century until October 2022, cholera cases in the world reached 4 million with an average death rate of 21,000-143,000 per year. Cholera is rare in developed countries. Residents who live in areas where clean water is scarce or sanitation facilities are inadequate are vulnerable to cholera.
