SES urges citizens not to export large amounts of deposit packaging to Lithuania and Estonia – Society and Politics – News

Instead, the SES asks residents to dispose of it in separate collection areas.

According to Kļaveniece, as deposit systems for used packaging (glass, plastic bottles and cans) have been operating in Lithuania and Estonia for several years, Latvians increasingly want to transfer large amounts of used packaging with the deposit system label to the Baltic neighbors in order to earn money.

However, such shipments of waste – more than 20 kilograms to Lithuania and four kilograms to Estonia – are considered as transboundary shipments of waste, which are subject to strict requirements. Such shipments are considered to be illegal, but the actions – as an administrative violation. The person who organizes such shipments may be held administratively liable and a fine of up to 1,100 euros may be imposed for this violation.

The competent authorities of Lithuania have established a case when a natural person has exported 200 kilograms of used deposit packaging from Latvia to Lithuania. The responsible authority of the neighboring country informed the State Environmental Service about this violation, which in September of this year imposed a fine of 70 euros on the person.

The State Environmental Service is a direct administrative institution subordinated to the Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, established in 2005. The aim of the Service is to ensure compliance with regulatory enactments in the field of environmental protection, radiation safety and nuclear safety and the use of natural resources, as well as to promote the sustainable use of natural resources and energy.
