UN calls on Armenia and Azerbaijan to resume negotiations and allow humanitarian aid

The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres urged the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan to resume negotiations under the mediation of the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

Through a statement, Guterres expressed that the objective of his appeal is to reach a lasting peace agreement between the parties with the cessation of military activities in Nagorno Karabakh.

The text highlights the importance of the OSCE to end the historic conflict but omits a possible participation by Turkey, which has asked to be included in the negotiations in recent days.

For its part, Azerbaijan asked for France to be excluded from mediation after the French Senate approved a text calling for the “recognition” of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Likewise, the UN made clear its willingness to deploy its humanitarian aid to the affected populations in the separatist enclave. Only if Armenia and Azerbaijan guarantee the smooth delivery of aid.
