Serbian President Vucic Dismisses Foreign Influence and Opposition Demands After Election Protests

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said today that he is not interested in the publications in foreign media or the opinions of foreign governments, but only in the opinion of Serbian citizens, reported Tanjug, quoted by BTA.

Asked how he would comment on German media reports that Serbia needs another opposition, Vucic added that he does not care who outside of Serbia wants another government and another opposition in the country.

“I don’t care, let them think about it, I care about the citizens of Serbia. I don’t care what foreign media and foreign governments say. What the government will be depends on the citizens of Serbia,” he pointed out.

Vucic also dismissed the possibility of an international investigation into alleged abuses in parliamentary and local elections, which took place on December 17 and were won by his Serbian Progressive Party (SPP).

The opposition, which demands that the results be annulled, organized a series of protests.

“The elections are a matter that concerns the state bodies and institutions of this country,” the Serbian head of state said.

Thousands of people gathered in a square in central Belgrade on December 30 in the largest-ever protest over parliamentary and local elections, the results of which demonstrators want annulled.

The ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SPP) won 46.72 percent of the vote in early parliamentary elections on December 17, according to preliminary results from the state election commission.

The opposition coalition Serbia Against Violence, which came second in the general election, accused the SPP of electoral manipulation, which the authorities deny.
