Serbia: Stopping gas because of Bulgaria is impossible

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Bernabic, said today that is not concerned about the inflow of gas through the Balkan Stream through Bulgaria to Serbia, noting that the discussion on the possibility of stopping the transit of gas is inadmissible.

This is stated in her statement, published on the website of the Serbian government.

In a statement before the Economic Forum in Jahorina Bernabic estimated that stopping the transit of gas would be an unprecedented precedent.

That would mean that there are no contracts, contractual obligations, the rule of law, but the Wild West reigns and the appropriation of a foreign truck with goods.

The Prime Minister pointed out that if this happens, there is no longer security for anyone in Europe and the world, recalling that Serbia has invested more than a billion euros in the pipeline.

At the same time we paid for gas, it is ours, we have a supply contract with Russia. It happened that he passed through Bulgaria, there were problems, but the Bulgarian problems are not ours, said Bernabic.

PCM is not worried about stopping Russian gas for Bulgaria

The country is practically independent of natural gas

She expressed hope that Poland and Bulgaria will be able to agree on gas supplies.

I am interested in how people live in Serbia, and any disturbance in the EU would have negative consequences for our country’s economy. The calmer and more stable, the better for us, the Prime Minister concluded.

So far, there has been no disruption to gas supplies to the Republic of Northern Macedonia (RSM), after Russia cut off supplies to Bulgaria, where the country receives gas. PCM is not very dependent on gas as an energy source. Most of it is spent on heating plants, and the heating season is over. Even if there is a complete shutdown of Russian gas, the effect will be almost zero. This was stated earlier today by the Minister of Economy Kreshnik Bekteshi.

Gazprom stopped the gas and warned us not to touch the transit

Poland has confirmed the suspension of supplies

Gazprom has completely suspended gas supplies to the Bulgarian company Bulgargaz and the Polish PGNiG due to non-payment in rubles on time. Gazprom also reminds that Bulgaria and Poland are transit countries, so “in case of unauthorized withdrawal of Russian gas from transit volumes to third countries, transit deliveries will be reduced by this volume.”

On March 31, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree requiring some countries to pay for gas delivered after April 1 in rubles only. For this purpose, Gazprombank opens special accounts in rubles and foreign currency type “K” for foreign buyers. The foreign buyer pays for the gas in the contract currency, GPB sells it on the Moscow Stock Exchange and transfers rubles to Gazprom. At this point, the obligation to pay for the natural resource is considered fulfilled.

The suspension of gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland turned out to be the first since Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month that “unfriendly” foreign buyers would have to pay state-owned Gazprom in rubles instead of other currencies. The EC has decided not to pay for gas in rubles, but said on Friday that this would not be a violation of sanctions.
