Senior woman from the Würzburg district hands over tens of thousands of euros in cash

First attempt at fraud detected: The victim received a call Monday afternoon from an alleged government official claiming that her daughter was involved in a fatal traffic accident. She now has to post bail to avoid jail time. The senior recognized the attempted fraud and initially did not respond to the call.

A short time later another call: How bold the scammers are in their actions became apparent during the day. That evening, the elderly woman’s phone rang again. The caller again posed as a police officer and explained to the woman that she had been called by scammers in the afternoon. The alleged police officer said that she could now help the police to arrest the fraudsters in the act. Believing that she was supporting the right police, the victim deposited several tens of thousands of euros in front of the front door, which were then picked up by an unknown person. There is no description of the money collector.

The Würzburg criminal police have taken over the investigation and are now hoping for information from the public:

  • Who noticed people or vehicles in the Greußenheim area?
  • Who can provide relevant information that could help clarify the case?

Potential witnesses are urgently requested to contact the Würzburg criminal police on Tel. 0931/457-1732.

The prevention campaigns of the police headquarters in Lower Franconia-

At the end of 2020, the police headquarters in Lower Franconia launched the prevention campaign “Leg’auf!” brought to life. In addition, the “#NMMO” campaign also started in Lower Franconian schools in July 2022. With the #NMMO campaign, the Lower Franconian police are now relying on the support of schoolchildren. These are intended to draw the attention of grandparents and older acquaintances to the scams of the perpetrators.

The aim of these campaigns is to inform older people and their relatives in particular about phenomena such as “grandchild fraud” and “fake police officers”, to sensitize them and to give tips on how to behave. The most important messages are:

  • Hang up. Dial the emergency number 110 yourself and ask the police if they are being called or if relatives are actually in distress.
  • The police will never instruct you to leave money or jewelery at home for collection or to hand them over to collectors!
  • Don’t give money to strangers! Even the police will not pick up valuables from your front door to take them into custody!
  • The perpetrators can use Call ID spoofing to show any phone number they want on the phone display – the real police never shows 110 (not even with the area code)!
  • Talk to your friends, neighbors and relatives about the phenomenon!
