Selters asks for donations for the forest – film and surprise flyer

News from May 27, 2021

VIDEO | The city of Selters asks its citizens in an innovative way for donations for the reforestation of the forest. A film shows how dramatic many forest areas look and a flyer, which literally comes with a surprise, advertises for help.

Selters. In the three-minute film, forester Helmut Nett explains that the last few years have been very dry and the weakened spruce trees ?? infested by the bark beetle ?? have died. Drone flights impressively show the wasteland where green forest once stood. Nett estimates that around 30 hectares in the Selters forest are currently infested and expects further areas to be damaged.

Initially, about ten hectares in the forest in the direction of Krümmel are to be reforested. The head of the forest district would like to plant various climate-resistant deciduous trees, especially oak varieties, in so-called clumps of around 40 pieces and protect them from wild animals. Nett wants to leave the larger areas between the clumps to nature and hopes that birch, larch and mountain ash will grow there. He explains: ?? For the future forest, we want both: in addition to the trees that have been planted, nature itself should develop a dynamic and establish trees that survive in the changed climate. We don’t even know exactly where the climate is going, nature has to do a good deal itself.

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate subsidizes the afforestation with 50,000 euros. 30,000 euros are still missing for the 10,000 trees initially required. So that’s three euros per tree planted. To raise this, the city of Selters asks its citizens with the slogan? My Selters, my forest, my contribution? about donations. Each Selterser household will receive a card in the next few days with the necessary information and a QR code for the film. But the card itself is a thriving ambassador for this idea, because the paper contains flower seeds. You can plant them, water them and wait for summer flowers to open.

Günther and Kersten Geyer from Selters had the idea to call on their fellow citizens of Selters to donate, they support the campaign with a larger donation. “This depressing image of the forest has taken us away,” says Günther Geyer, “We don’t just want to talk about the problems, we want to do something specifically and set a good example”. Hanno Steindorf, 1st alderman of the town of Selters, brought up another idea: ?? How about if clubs and organizations can pool money in the next few weeks and create a recognizable piece of forest ??? (PM)
