‘Selling companion animal delivery boxes’… Controversy over cruel animal trafficking in China

“Does it make sense to sell dogs in courier boxes that cannot breathe properly?”

On the 25th, Weibo (Chinese version of Twitter) reported that some merchants on the Chinese e-commerce platform handle pets such as dogs, cats and turtles and sell them through courier service.

A blogger with 2 million followers on Weibo revealed that some sellers are selling pets online in courier boxes at low prices.

Earlier, in September of last year, in a distribution warehouse in Henan Province, more than 5,000 companion animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and hamsters were found dead and shocked.

At the time, animal rescue organizations identified dead pets as having no food or water for at least five days.

Nevertheless, a pet seller recently posted a post online promoting “I will send a good obedience, not a country puppy,”.

The state-run Global Times pointed out that when you search for Taobao, an online shopping mall, animals such as turtles are on the list for sale.

One of the turtle sellers said, “If you pay for it, we will send you the turtle of the breed you want right away,” he said. “Pet animals of various prices are also delivered in courier boxes.”

At the same time, he even said, “Because turtles are resistant to cold and do not die well, there is no need to worry about the survival of turtles in the process of delivery by courier.”

However, in China, the act of delivering live animals in courier boxes is prohibited by law.

The anger of Chinese netizens is growing as the practice of selling pets in courier boxes has become so popular online.
