Secondary school in Assen introduces two weeks of masking obligation after vacation | NOW

At the Vincent van Gogh College in Assen (location Lariks), a mouth masking obligation is introduced for students from the fourth grade for two weeks. The school confirms this to NU.nl after reporting by RTV Drenthe.

The measure will apply throughout the building from Tuesday. Teachers are also required to wear a face mask, but may take it off in the classroom.

Koos Nieuwland, the director of the school, says in conversation with RTV Drenthe that there is still too much uncertainty about the transmissibility of the virus by young people from the age of fifteen. In addition, many students have returned from vacation in recent weeks. “We see that there have been corona outbreaks at a number of popular holiday spots,” said Nieuwland.

In principle, the measure is in effect until September 1. “This is due to the incubation period that the virus can have. If it then appears that the number of infections in Drenthe remains unabatedly low, we want to scrap the measure again”, the school explains in a letter.

During gym lessons in the open air there is no obligation to mask. Students can also go outside to take a break between lessons without a mouth mask.
