Seawater Injected into Undersea Tunnel at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant for Contaminated Water Discharge

    NHK reported today (6th) that seawater has been injected into an undersea tunnel used to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan.

    TEPCO began pouring about 6,000 tons of seawater into the undersea tunnel from both land and sea near the Fukushima nuclear power plant yesterday (5th) and finished the work this morning (6th).

    When the heavy excavation equipment used for the undersea tunnel construction is recovered, the tunnel construction is completed.

    TEPCO previously completed the excavation of an undersea tunnel about 1030m long on April 25, and the contaminated water is expected to be discharged into the sea in front of the nuclear power plant through the undersea tunnel.

    TEPCO plans to complete all construction work for ocean discharge of contaminated water by the end of this month after completing the construction of the tank to store the contaminated water right before sending it to the undersea tunnel.

    The Japanese government plans to begin discharging contaminated water into the ocean this summer.

    An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) investigation team visited Japan last week to complete a comprehensive verification process, and is expected to release a final report sometime this month before Japan releases the contaminated water.
