Wednesday evening around 10 p.m. the first shots were fired at a shisha lounge in western Hanau, on the Kurt-Schumacher-Platz. The perpetrator ran away in a dark car. Shots were then fired again at another hookah cafe.
According to German media, the first target was mainly young people of Kurdish origin. He certainly killed five people here.
Offender dead in home
Immediately after the shootings, the police started a major search for the perpetrator. The man was later found dead in his home. The body of the archer’s mother was also found in the house. According to the police, he acted alone.
A letter with a confession and a video would have been found in the home. According to the German newspaper Bild, the shooter, Tobias R., acted from a “right-radical motive.”
The German authorities speak of a “xenophobic motive” with the 43-year-old offender. R. would have an aversion to strangers. “Federal prosecutors have taken the investigation into account because of the importance of this case and the possible xenophobic motives,” said a justice spokesperson.
The man has previously recorded a video where he rages against migrants from Arab countries and Turkey.
