Seasonic to release 12-pin cables for Nvidia GPUs

The countdown to Ampere GPUs GeForce of Nvidia has started, and in the meantime, we continue to receive juicy information about them. We recently learned of a rumor detailing Nvidia’s new 12-pin power connector, and now a new image of a 12-pin cable has appeared – and allegedly posted it Seasonic, a popular manufacturer of power supplies.

The post was seen by twitter user HXL, who found the image on the Bilibili forums. It shows a Seasonic cable next to its box, fitting dual 8-pin connectors into a single 12-pin connector. The cable is called “Nvidia 12-pin PCIe Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 Connector” It is 750mm long, and the box says “850W or higher power supply recommended with this cable”.

As you can see above, the 12-pin micro connector is small, not much larger than one of the 8 pins on the other end. This cable has two 8-pin male connectors, and is intended to be plugged directly into the modular ports of a Seasonic source, rather than being used as an adapter on your current 8-pin cables.

Normally, the 8-pin connectors are rated for 150W each, which coupled with the 75W through the PCIe port adds up to 375W of total board power. This is not completely unheard of, as even custom boards from Nvidia’s AIC partners occasionally have three PCIe power connectors. This could be an indication that Nvidia’s high-end GPUs could be very power hungry.

After all, we can’t deny that a single 12-pin connector would be a much more elegant solution than multiple connectors, especially if you decide to indulge in individual sleeved cables. We will keep you informed.
