Seasonal Weather and Rapid Increase of Chickenpox Cases in Ho Chi Minh City

Seasonal weather is a factor in the development of chickenpox, and the number of cases tends to increase rapidly.

Hu Ying Thi Thuy Hoa, head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tropical Disease Hospital, said chickenpox cases would be concentrated in the first few months of the year. According to 2023 statistics, Ho Chi Minh City’s Tropical Disease Hospital received more than 500 cases, of which up to 10% were hospitalized.

Many patients suffered serious complications while hospitalized, such as pneumonia, cellulitis, sepsis, and even critical illness requiring mechanical ventilation.

Chickenpox is caused by the chickenpox virus. The disease is easily transmitted from person to person through the virus released from secretions or burst blisters. Therefore, chickenpox spreads easily in crowded places, people with families, workplaces, schools, etc.

People with chickenpox show symptoms of viral infection such as fever, sore throat, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Afterwards, blisters form on the body and the spots spread everywhere.

According to Dr. Hoa, most chickenpox diseases can be cured within 1-2 weeks if diagnosed early and treated appropriately.

However, if your immune system is low or you receive inappropriate treatment, diseases such as pneumonia and blood infections can progress seriously and be life-threatening.

Patients suspected of having chickenpox have serious signs of illness such as persistent cough, chest pain, difficulty breathing, green phlegm, fever, chills, redness and swelling of the skin, lethargy, drowsiness, and obstetrics, so they should go to the hospital and receive timely emergency treatment.

“People with weakened immune systems, such as children, pregnant women, patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy, HIV patients, and diabetics, may more easily develop a serious illness if they contract chickenpox,” Dr. Hoa said.

Dr. Hoa recommends that people with signs of suspected or diagnosed chickenpox should not bathe in straw water. Inside the straw is dirt and mud that carries bacteria. When you bathe, these bacteria will enter the wound and cause a blood infection.

Patients with chickenpox should bathe in clean water, avoid sore spots and limit rubbing to reduce complications of skin infection and blood infection.
