Sea Proven, the Mayenne company that listens to the bottom of the oceans

The silence of the confinement has done good for the seabed. The Mayenne company Sea Proven has designed a marine drone that collects a significant amount of information, especially concerning the activity of sea creatures. She observed that the reduction in noise associated with confinements has allowed cetaceans to regain their rights in many areas near human-inhabited reefs.

Observations never made before

The data recorded by the drone, dubbed Sphyrna, made it possible to notice behaviors never seen before in some sperm whales. “We could hear up to 7 or 8 animals at the same time which had coordinated hunting behaviors. That is to say, they use the clicks of some to retrieve the signal and hunt discreetly”, explains Fabien de Varenne, the captain and founder of Sea Proven. “This is a world first, it has never been observed previously and we were therefore able to have really unique observations, among others during confinement”.

After expeditions in 2018, 2019 and 2020, Sea Proven today nurtures larger ambitions. Fabien de Varenne wishes “to deploy about 300 boats on all the oceans of the planet”. The objective, to make “oceanic big data”, that is to say “measure around fifty different parameters, in meteorology, oceanography, acoustics, etc. To calibrate the spatial data produced by the planet’s satellites, but also complete this data with in-situ data”. This project was selected by the Solar Impulse foundation of Bertrand Picard, among the “1,000 projects selected around the world to …. change the world, explains the Mayenne captain.
