Scientists Claim Smartwatches Can Detect Covid-19 Early

Suara.com – Smart watch (smartwatch) You, as well as other smart devices, can be used to measure vital statistics such as heart rate, body temperature and other physiological indicators.

A variety of adequate information has been collected, so that it can help determine the possibility of Corona virus infection, several days before an individual is diagnosed with the virus through a series of Covid-19 tests.

These devices include watches Apple Watch, Garmin, and Fitbit, as well as other brands of smart clothing product manufacturers.

Reported page Gizmochina, Monday (18/1/2021), this series of smartwatches can show whether a person is positive for Covid-19, even before known symptoms are felt, when these symptoms have become symptomatic and tests can detect the presence of the virus.

Many believe that wearable technology can play an important role in reducing pandemics, as well as several other infectious diseases.

Researchers at the Mount Sinai Health System found that the Apple Watch can detect subtle changes in a person’s heart rate, which can provide evidence and signals that the person may have contracted the coronavirus.

These indications or signals can come as early as a week, before the person may feel sick or an infection is detected after the test.

The study analyzed what was defined as heart rate variability, the time variation between a person’s heartbeats, which is also an indicator of how well a person’s immune system is working.

People suffering from Covid-19 have been observed to have lower heart rate variability, while people who are negative show higher variability in the time between heartbeats.

It should be noted that high heart rate variability does not reflect or indicate an increased heart rate, but rather indicates that a person’s nervous system is moderately active, adaptable, and could be more effective at dealing with stress.

The study involved about 300 health care workers at Mount Sinai medical facilities, wearing Apple Watch for 153 days from April to September 2020.

The data generated by smartwatches can be of great help in fighting the pandemic, as it is estimated that more than 50 percent of coronavirus cases are spread by asymptomatic people, completely unaware that they are carriers.

This is according to a US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report last week.

A separate and independent study by researchers from Stanford University, in which participants wore a variety of different activity trackers from Garmin, Fitbit, Apple and others.

The study found that about 81 percent of participants who tested positive for Covid-19 experienced an increase in heart rate for up to nine full days, before symptoms began to be observed, which, according to the study, indicate the onset of symptoms.

The Stanford researchers used smartwatch data to correctly identify up to 66 percent of Covid-19 cases, four to seven days before participants showed symptoms, as reported in their study published in Nature Biomedical Engineering in November last year.

The study examined data from 32 people who tested positive for Covid-19 among more than 5,000 participants.

The Stanford research team has advanced to create an alarm system that alerts smart device users that their heart rate has been increasing for a continuous period of time.

It is believed that such technology could help reduce some of the shortcomings that were observed related to Corona virus testing.

Manufacturers of wearables are also looking at how technology can be used to fight the virus and have started funding research in this direction.
