Schwerin (dpa / mv) – The schools in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are to be kept open until the health department objects if the number of cases in a region is too high. Education Minister Bettina Martin (SPD) announced talks with the districts and independent cities about how school operations should be organized from April 12th for the next few days. “In view of the comparatively low incidence of infections in schools and through the use of the self-test strategy, vaccinations and compliance with hygiene measures, the aim is to continue to enable classroom teaching in schools,” the minister said on Sunday.

Classes are to take place on April 8th and 9th as in the days before the Easter holidays, which last until April 7th. Classes one to six as well as the final classes are given face-to-face classes, from class 7 alternate classes. Should a health department impose restrictions, they should be informed by April 6th at the latest.

The increasing numbers of infections due to the spread of the more dangerous British variant of the coronavirus pose greater challenges for schools than they already are, according to Martin. She appealed to broadly accept the offer of Corona self-tests for teachers and students twice a week after the Easter holidays. “Daily face-to-face classes or alternating classes at school will only be possible if we implement all protective measures in a targeted manner.” All schools in the country have therefore received self-tests. Further deliveries are to follow.

According to the latest report by the State Office for Health and Social Affairs, there were last 51 confirmed, active cases of corona infection in the state’s schools, of which 42 were students and 9 teachers or other school employees. 39 schools were affected. The numbers are from Friday.
