School pedagogy mdS upbringing and education

Welcome to the pages of Department I of Educational Sciences.

From different theoretical perspectives and with different methodological approaches to educational science, we deal with teaching, school and teacher training in research and teaching. The profile of our work area includes qualitative-reconstructive social research on school interactions, processes and structures.

In the tradition of the educationalist Wolfgang Klafki, we understand “educational issues as social issues”. What is meant by this is a special responsibility of educational science and pedagogy – also with knowledge of historical and current social developments – for the perception of the concerns of young people and for the shaping of their opportunities through institutionalized education and upbringing. Klafki elaborates on this relationship between education and society:

“First, it recognizes that society is always made by people or groups of people, that is, the way it is at a certain point in time, it could also be or become different.” Secondly, it recognizes “that at least modern societies and the development tendencies that are effective in them contain numerous contradictions, that different interest groups wrestle with one another, whose power and their chances of enforcement are certainly different, but not in such a way that monopolies of power are irrevocably established once and for all would be. ” (Wolfgang Klafki: Second study on educational theory and didactics, 1991)

In our field of educational professionalization for the teaching profession, we transfer current research approaches (in particular career biographical and structural theoretical approaches) into specific learning formats. Our aim is to continuously relate theoretical knowledge and empirical findings to our own teaching, learning and research practices.
