‘School lunch and exercise ensure fewer overweight children’

With a school lunch in combination with more physical activity at school, the percentage of overweight children between the ages of four and eighteen can fall from 13.5 percent to 10.2 percent in 2040. The number of obese children can drop from 2.8 percent to 2. 3 percent in 2040. This is what researchers from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) say in a report that was presented to State Secretary Paul Blokhuis of Public Health on Thursday.

According to the report, parents, children and primary schools are positive about a healthy school lunch and more exercise at school to combat obesity. Parents are willing to pay 1.75 euros per day per child for this.

The costs for a lunch in combination with extra exercise activities, however, come to 4.50 euros per day. Because not all costs are covered with the parental contribution, additional financial support is needed, according to the research.

Self-serve lunch

Having lunch together at school is a good option in the form of an even more lunch, the report states. Children prepare a healthy lunch at school themselves. Even more lunches make children eat more fruit, vegetables and brown bread, and drink more milk and water and fewer sugary drinks, the researchers say.

Movement moments

More exercise at school can be done, for example, by inserting more exercise moments between lessons. For extra sports and games, the help of after-school care staff and neighborhood sports coaches can be called in.
