The latest research has found that Schisandra chinensis, a very common medicinal material in traditional Chinese medicine, contains a compound that is very effective against colorectal cancer and colon cancer. The compound, called Schisandrin B, is particularly effective when targeting advanced colon cancer cells. The research team also had a lot of doubts: “It is too mysterious to be so effective.” This study has been published in the international journal “ACS Pharmacology & Translational Science”. Previous research has shown that Schisandrin B may have anti-cancer effects on breast, liver, ovary, gallbladder and stomach cancer.

According to a report by Medical News Daily (MNT) on the 5th, according to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women. Colon cancer is the third leading cause of death in men and the fourth leading cause of death in women. Colon cancer or rectal cancer are often referred to together because rectal cancer usually occurs when polyps form in the colon or rectum. A new study has found that polyphenols found in Schisandra chinensis, a plant commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine, can help treat colorectal cancer, especially in its advanced stages. Previous research has shown that Schisandrin B may have anti-cancer effects on breast, liver, ovary, gallbladder and stomach cancer. The study authors, who conducted in vitro and animal experiments on colon cancer tumor cells, tested the effects of Schisandrin B. Through various forms of molecular and cellular analyses, the researchers determined that Schisandrin B caused cancer cell death in cancer cells, findings that help explain the mechanism of Schisandrin’s anti-cancer properties.

The author of this study, Dr. Hani El-Nezami, associate professor at the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Hong Kong: “We found that Schisandrin B can cause cancer cell death. In the experiment, this is a programmed cell death process, not A phenomenon that occurs by chance,” the researchers also identified the involvement of a specific protein, CHOP. Schisandrin B’s anti-cancer effects were less effective when this protein was blocked, suggesting that the CHOP protein is somehow critical in Schisandrin B’s ability to fight cancerous tumors. Schisandrin B also has very low toxicity to healthy cells compared to currently available cancer drugs. However, the effectiveness of Schisandrin B against advanced cancer cells “is still somewhat of a mystery,” Dr. Nezami said: “We don’t know why Schisandrin B is particularly effective against advanced colon cancer.”
