Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Saudi Prince Abdul Rahman bin Musaed commented on the events that sparked controversy recently regarding his country’s national team, after coach Roberto Mancini excluded some players from the team’s roster, for disciplinary reasons.
The “Green” coach had dispensed with the services of Salman Al-Faraj, Sultan Al-Ghannam and Nawaf Al-Aqidi, as he said that some of them refused to play for the national team, and some of them set conditions for being with the team, before the players denied this.
Prince Abdul Rahman bin Musaed said through his account on the In the Asian Championship.
He added: “We must all support the team’s players, coach, and management and stand behind them, and after the end of the participation, I have no doubt that those responsible for our sport will put the dots on the letters and clarify the circumstances of what happened.”
He continued: “Mancini is a technically distinguished coach, and from what I saw in the Oman match, the spirit of the players, their fighting, the clarity of their special relationship with each other, as well as the mutual trust between them and the coach, all of this calls for optimism that the team is heading to a special stage, God willing, apart from achieving the title.”
The Saudi prince continued: “In conclusion, I do not doubt, even for a moment, the patriotism of all Saudi players, specifically the six players about whom the coach was asked in the press conference. Even if it is proven that someone said, ‘I will not rest in the reserves,’ or ‘I would like to play as a starter,’ or ‘I would not like to participate in a friendly match’ – that.” “This was an event – this is something that requires a reasonable disciplinary punishment according to the regulations, but for them to question their patriotism because of this is something I find to be greatly exaggerated and illogical.”
