Saudi Arabia’s Green Saudi Initiative: Road Map for Planting 10 Billion Trees

Al-Marsad newspaper – SPA: Within the framework of the Green Saudi Initiative launched by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Green Saudi Arabia – may God protect him -, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced today the road map for agricultural (10) billion trees, which falls within the Kingdom’s national and international commitments to address all climate-related environmental challenges and improve the quality of life of citizens through the economic and social benefits that will be achieved in the long term through afforestation efforts.

This initiative coincides with the activities of the second edition of Climate Week in the Middle East and North Africa, which the Kingdom is hosting for the first time from October 8 to 12, 2023 in Riyadh. The map includes a strategic plan designed to develop vegetation in all natural habitat areas. It will also include cities, highways, and green spaces. To ensure that the new trees contribute to enhancing the health and well-being of the Kingdom’s population, the largest proportion of whom live in urban areas. It is expected that city centers will benefit from the increase in tree density, which will contribute to reducing temperatures by 2.2 degrees Celsius and improving air quality. High temperatures and air pollution are among the most common environmental risks in urban areas around the world, which are linked to the spread of a group of non-communicable diseases, such as heart, arterial, and respiratory diseases. Efforts to develop vegetation in cities also contribute to reducing carbon dioxide.
