Satellite Survey Finds 2,200 Candidate Planets in 2 Years

So far about 120 candidates found by TESS have been confirmed.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON – NASA’s Exoplanet Transit survey satellite or TESS celebrating impressive achievements. A total of more than 2,200 exoplanet candidate planets were discovered in the first two years of operation.

Launched in 2018, satellites search for planets outside the solar system using the transit method. This means that the satellite looks for changes in the brightness of distant stars.

When a planet passes between the star and Earth, the star’s brightness decreases slightly. TESS looks at this decline and uses it to infer the existence of a planet and estimate its characteristics such as size and mass.

All of the planetary candidates that the evidence found have now been cataloged in a new paper by researchers led by a Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher.

“The interesting thing is to see the TESS exoplanet map as a kind of to-do list – with 2,000 items on it,” Guerrero said in a statement. Digital Trends, Sunday (28/3).

The discovery of the TESS candidate includes an Earth-sized planet in the habitable zone called TOI-700 d. The planet is about 100 light years away and close enough to its tiny, cool red dwarf that has the potential to have liquid water on its surface.

The satellites also discovered a system called TOI 125, a star similar to our sun that houses at least three planets smaller than Neptune and possibly two smaller planets.

There is also an extremely short-orbited planet LHS 3844 b, which orbits very close to its star. As a result, a year there lasts only 111 days and has a surface temperature of nearly a thousand degrees Fahrenheit.

Since completing its original two-year mission, TESS is now on additional missions to find more exoplanets and reveal more details about the exoplanets that have been found to prove it. It takes time and patience to ascertain the existence of a planet candidate. So far about 120 candidates found by TESS have been confirmed.

“Now the role of the community is to connect the dots. It’s really cool because the terrain is so young, there’s still a lot of room to discover: that ‘Aha’ moment, “said Guerrero.
