Santoña, the safest municipality in Cantabria, according to a study

SANTANDER/MADRID, 27 ( EUROPA PRESS)

Santoña is the safest municipality in Cantabria since it is the population of the region where it is rarer to suffer a robbery at home, according to the report ‘Thefts: the safest municipalities. Analysis of the probability of suffering a robbery at home ‘, prepared by’ We are Safe ‘and released this Friday by the Insurance Business Association (Unespa).

In this way, the probability of being visited by thieves at home in Santoña is 49.24% lower than in the whole of Spain.

This list of the safest municipalities in Cantabria is completed by Laredo (-40.7%), Castro Urdiales (-27.7%), Camargo (-6.7%), Santander (-4.9%) and Astillero ( -2.3%).

Santander is also among the 25 safest municipalities with between 100,000 and 250,000 inhabitants in Spain, occupying position 24, very far from San Cristóbal de la Laguna (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) where the probability of being robbed at home is a 63.10% lower than the national average.

NATIONAL DATA

The Tenerife municipality of San Cristóbal de la Laguna is the safest in Spain since it is the town where it is rarest to suffer a robbery at home.

Logic dictates that the municipalities with the most inhabitants are, at the same time, the ones that suffer the most crime simply because they house more houses and more people. To save this effect, ‘We are Safe’ does not look at the total number of incidents but at the volume of robberies that occur depending on the insured homes that exist in a given location.

In addition, it fixes a mirror in which everyone can look: the situation of the whole of Spain. This reference point allows you to tell whether this or that place is safe or unsafe. Additionally, and to prevent towns and villages from taking the top positions, the report has set a series of thresholds or cuts that allow comparing municipalities of comparable size to each other.

The main ranking brings together the 25 safest towns in the country with more than 50,000 inhabitants. This classification is headed by San Cristóbal de la Laguna. The top positions are completed by Lugo, Santiago de Compostela, Irún and Salamanca. In all these populations, the probability of being robbed at home is at least half that of the whole of Spain.

If the view is focused exclusively on the main Spanish cities, that is, on those towns with more than 250,000 inhabitants, the picture changes. In first position is Palma de Mallorca, where the probability of being visited by thieves at home is 44% lower than in the whole of Spain. This second list is completed by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (-34%), Vigo (-25%), Bilbao (-19%) and Valladolid (-16%).

And which are the most insecure large municipalities in Spain? Madrid is leading. There it is 42% more likely to be robbed at home than in the country as a whole. They are followed by Murcia (+ 37%), L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (+ 32%) and Seville (+ 22%). Meanwhile, Barcelona and Zaragoza are the cities with the largest population that present a probability of robbery more similar to that of the whole of Spain.

In turn, the calmest intermediate cities -that is, those whose census ranges between 100,000 and 250,000 inhabitants- are the aforementioned San Cristóbal de la Laguna, as well as Salamanca, SanSebastián, Pamplona and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
