Covid protest events in Daugavmala and at the Freedom Monument gather several hundred people / Article / LSM.lv

Several hundred people today protested at two events in Riga against restrictions to reduce the spread of Covid-19. Both in Daugavmala and at the Freedom Monument, there were far more people currently allowed, and a large part did not observe the two-meter distance and did not use the face masks that the organizers were committed to providing. The protesters’ demands were wide, from objections to vaccination to a change of government.

Continuous car horn signals dominated for several hours At the Daugavmala rally – In support of several hundred gatherers, protesters circled the cars along the waterfront, muffling the speakers in a megaphone.

“We are power, we are power,” cried the gatherers.

Although the event was officially announced by the President of the Environmental Protection Club Arvīds Ulme, the small speaking platform was dominated by Jānis Pļaviņš – an active conspirator of conspiracy theories and owner of the dubious Memory Water, who a few days ago urgently called for donating 5,000 euros to the event.

Hundreds of supporters were crowded around the speakers, praising the demands to abandon “all senseless restrictions”, “stop forced vaccination” and leave the country with the prime minister.

People were also not scattered by recordings from police cars, which indicated that the event was considered illegal and called on those present to leave it. Law enforcement officers watched what was happening from the sidelines, compiling a series of administrative records.

One police officer was injured during the incident. He was approached by a car. According to the representatives of the Latvian Radio, the decision to initiate criminal proceedings will be made.

Three hours later, part of the embankment picketers moved at the Freedom Monument, where the second event was announced – among its organizers were Aleksejs Rosļikovs, Valērijs Petrovs and others, who were once excluded from the “Harmony”.

Here, too, the distance and masks promised by the organizers did not go much better; there were some hustle and bustle and one of the participants left the event accompanied by the police, but after about an hour most of the protesters began to disperse.
