SAMU joins forces with SAUV Life, the application that connects rescuers and victims of cardiac arrest

Since March 2018, the SAUV Life application has enabled citizen rescuers who are registered there to intervene with people who are victims of cardiac arrest. The SAMU 21 has just launched the device in Burgundy this Tuesday, October 5.

In Burgundy, the Dijon University Hospital has carried out nearly 330 operations for cardiac arrests since January 2021. In order to increase the speed of treatment of victim patients, the SAMU 21 is announcing its partnership with l’application SAUV Life. It brings together citizen-rescuers who can provide life-saving actions as quickly as possible.

“When the Samu receives a call for cardiac arrest, we send a team of rescuers. The citizen-rescuer then receives a notification if he is 10 minutes walk from the place where the patient is. If he accepts, he receives a notification. is guided by a GPS and by the SAMU to carry out the actions “, describes Doctor Lionel Lamhaut, president of the SAUV Life association. Volunteers can also be called upon to retrieve a defibrillator.

3,000 people already registered in Côte-d’Or

Created in March 2018, the application is free and available on all download platforms. It brings together nearly 550,000 registered citizens spread over 67 departments. 300 cores have been relaunched since its launch, or 7 to 10 per month.

For SAMU 21, the association with SAUV Life therefore represents invaluable support. 3,000 people have already registered in Côte-d’Or. “It is a help which will be very important and which will add an additional link to the chain of survival, already well organized in France. The main link is resuscitation and the early application of cardiac massage”, says Doctor Pascal Incagnoli, deputy head of emergency department at Dijon University Hospital.

A victim of cardiac arrest has a 10% less chance of survival if no one intervenes from the first minute. In France, rescuers take between 13 and 14 minutes to arrive on average. The potential proximity of citizen-rescuers is an essential ally. In 60% of cases, the volunteers registered on SAUV Life perform a cardiac massage before the firefighters or the SAMU teams.

Almost instantaneously locating citizens who are near the event increases the chances of survival of patients

“It is a major partnership. As soon as each lost minute increases the mortality of patients in cardiac arrest, it is very important to start resuscitation maneuvers such as cardiac massage and defibrillations as quickly as possible”, says Doctor Incagnoli. Each year, 50,000 people die from cardiac arrest in France.

An application open to all volunteers, trained or not

The SAUV Life application is open to all people from the age of 15, whether they are trained or not. Knowing that only 20% of French people know how to save life, is there not a risk of leaving some patients in the hands of volunteers who do not master good practices?

“The worst is to do nothing. There are no bad gestures. When you are in cardiac arrest, you are dead. If you do nothing, you are dead. The slightest gesture of applying pressure on the chest can save a life, even when you are not trained in first aid “, guarantees Pascal Incagnoli.

Doctor Lionel Lamhaut also recalls that the citizen-rescuer is accompanied on the phone by specialists from 15: “Whether you are trained or not, you must act in the event of cardiac arrest. Do not worry, you are not alone. The SAMU will help you and guide you to carry out the actions that save”.

Officially launched this Tuesday, October 5 in Burgundy, SAUV Life now intends to convince as many citizens as possible to register on its platform. Activities will be organized in particular from spring 2022.
