Samsung sold less than 300 million smartphones in 2020, a first since 2011

Samsung only sold 270 million smartphones in 2020. This is the first time since 2011 that the South Korean group has not sold more than 300 million phones worldwide. The firm hopes to reach its usual score next year, in particular thanks to a vast catalog of mid-range 5G smartphones.

According to information relayed by ETNews, sales of Samsung smartphones have plunged below the 300 million mark worldwide in 2020. Not surprisingly, this collapse in sales is essentially the outcome of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the economic crisis resulting from the containment measures.

Samsung’s estimates for the year 2020 show 270 million smartphones sold worldwide. It’s here first time in 9 years that the Seoul giant sells so few phones. That year, the mobile market was still dominated by Apple. Samsung still had to settle for second place with market shares ranging from 10.8% to 22.8%, just behind its California rival.

Samsung hopes to sell 307 million smartphones in 2021

After this setback, Samsung expects the smartphone market to pick up again from 2021. Next year, the group hopes to sell 307 million mobile phones, including 287 million smartphones and 20 million feature phones. Samsung is therefore counting on a 14% increase in sales compared to 2020. At the end of this year, the manufacturer has already noticed the first signs of a return to growth. In the third quarter of 2020, Samsung also achieved record smartphone sales, which offsets the poor sales at the start of the year.

To boost sales of its mobile division in 2021, Samsung will rely in particular on a plethora of 5G smartphones for the mid and entry level market. Moreover, the group is also betting on the success of its next high-end smartphones, the Galaxy S21 (S30) and future foldable phones. Samsung hopes to sell 49.8 million high-end models next year, including 6 million foldable terminals. ETNews notably mentions the Galaxy Z Flip 2, the brand’s second flip smartphone. Samsung is actually expected to flood the market with foldable smartphones next year, including the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Fold S, Z Fold Lite, and Z Flip Lite.
