After Xiaomi, Panasonic, Philips or even LG, Samsung has just unveiled The Premiere. This is an ultra short throw 4K video projector. An alternative to very large TVs. It will be available in France at the end of 2020.

So-called ultra-short throw projectors are projectors that can be almost glued to the screen. This is the product that Samsung has just announced and it is nothing new. Indeed, there are already many models on the market. We had tested the Xiaomi Mi Projector, and there are also models from Panasonic, Philips or LG Electronics.
It is an alternative to traditional TVs, whether QLED or OLED, but also to traditional video projectors. The Premiere is the latest addition to Samsung’s “Lifestyle” line. This is the range that includes The Serif, The Frame, The Sero and The Terrace. These are products intended to blend in with your living room, with concepts that are often innovative for the general public. Like other manufacturers, Samsung offers an all-in-one solution with built-in woofers and the same Acoustic Beam virtual surround sound technology found on some Samsung soundbars.

Samsung The Premiere, also named LSP9T, offers projection up to 130 inches in 4K definition, even if we do not know if it will really be 4K matrices or simple 1080p, for a maximum brightness of 2800 ANSI lumens. According to Samsung, this is the world’s first HDR10 + certified projector with triple laser. We still lack many details on its characteristics, as well as the connections offered.
What is the point of an ultra short throw projector?
The first interest, as you will have understood, is linked to its projection ratio which in this case is generally less than 0.3. The throw ratio is the ratio of the image size to the projector-screen distance. It allows you to precisely define the position of the projector according to the desired image size (and vice versa). On a conventional projector, this ratio is around 1, while it is less than 0.3 on ultra-short throw projectors.
This type of video projector has other advantages, such as ease of installation. Just place it on a piece of furniture near the wall where you want to project the image. The installation costs are therefore lower compared to a conventional video projector. But there are also benefits for image quality and user experience, such as having better light output. In fact, since the video projector is located closer to the screen, there is less loss of light. Which is good if you use your projector in the middle of the day. Same goes for shadows, which can be useful if you want this format of projector in meeting rooms. Finally, the perceived noise is less important than on a conventional video projector.

Samsung has not yet announced the price of the Samsung The Premiere but it will undoubtedly be more expensive than conventional video projectors. This is what can be observed on the market with products already sold. The explanation comes from the design of the ultra-short throw projector… more expensive than that of a conventional projector because of the better quality optics required. In all cases, we have had confirmation thatit will indeed be available in France at the end of 2020.
