NI assessed the Russian Hermes missile system – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

The National Interest praised the Hermes guided weapon system

Edition The National Interest drew attention to the Hermes new-generation missile system presented at the Army 2020 forum.

“In Greek mythology, Hermes acts as an emissary and messenger of the gods. The new generation of the Hermes guided weapons system, recently introduced by Russia, could be a very powerful message, since a long-range supersonic missile is capable of destroying a Western tank with an almost 100 percent guarantee,” not without irony the author notes.

A representative of the Shipunov Design Bureau (part of the High-Precision Systems as part of the Rostec state corporation), said that according to the test results, the probability of hitting a tank is 98-99 percent, since the missile can deviate from the target by only fifty centimeters even when firing at a maximum range of one hundred kilometers …

It is reported that the new ammunition will fly at four times the speed of sound. They could occupy a certain niche between high-precision ammunition and artillery systems.

The Hermes system includes several reconnaissance and targeting unmanned aerial vehicles that can help it locate and hit a target. The complex also has a compact combat module with launchers for six missiles and can fire salvo fire at six targets simultaneously.

Each missile carries a high-explosive fragmentation warhead with twenty kilograms in TNT equivalent.

“Hermes” can be used against enemy armored vehicles, but it is also effective in destroying command or staff vehicles, communications centers and warehouses. The module is compatible with any chassis, including armored vehicles, which will make these platforms even more powerful.

The complex, which has an autonomous missile guidance system of the “fire and forget” type, can also fire when guided from UAVs and warships.

“This could be a game changer in the anti-tank platform arena and certainly challenge Israel’s Spike missiles, making the US Javelin anti-tank system completely obsolete,” the author concludes.
