Saint-Denis-lès-Martel. A meeting discusses “aging well”

The association “Mieux vivre dans le nord du Lot” is organizing a conference-debate with health professionals on Saturday, November 13 at 2 pm, at the Salle des Mathieux in Saint-Denis-les-Martel. Free admission. We met Sylvie Tabary, president of the association “Mieux vivre dans le nord du Lot”.

Why this “aging well, asking the right questions” conference-debate?

To combat the discouragement of the elderly in the north of the Lot and give them the means to react positively even in times of Covid. We invited Dr Tapesar, geriatrician in Saint-Céré, and nurses to give hope to the elderly, to show them that it is today possible, in the north of the Lot, to gain years of life by full physical and moral health by using the possibilities offered by the territory without giving in to the discouragement of the COVID news.

Gain years of healthy life?

Of course there are some diseases that you can’t do much about. But by accepting your age, by mobilizing the means put in place by the territory, it is possible to live longer in full possession of your means. The conference will show that it is possible to delay the degradation of everyone’s physical and mental functions by working on their energy, mobility, memory and many other things, in a simple and regular way.

But isolation, how to deal with it?

The vast majority of older people want to stay at home. Human and technical helpers are there to support them on site. But we too often forget the role of neighbors and elected officials, vital in these times of pandemic. The municipalities have a primary responsibility to ensure that they surround the elderly with kindness, and provide them with activities and visits. This question will be addressed as much as the new forms of accommodation which, today, favor the social life of their residents.

Are you ignoring the shortage of doctors which is having a major impact on the elderly?

The question of the lack of doctors and their good distribution on French territory is a national problem. In our opinion, the north of the Lot has only one map in hand: to show its capacity for medical innovation. However, we have strengths in the organization of care for the elderly. Is it the joker that could mobilize the living forces of the territory, first and foremost health professionals? Why not.
