Safari Shabani allegedly beaten for wearing nail polish and earrings – NRK Oslo & Viken – Local News, TV & Radio

– I’ve been attacked. Some guys came and started bothering me because I was wearing nail polish and earrings, says Safari Yves Shabani.

On Sunday night, the 25-year-old from Mysen was on his way home from a birthday party in Oslo. At Youngstorget he stopped to see when the next bus would leave.

Then a strange man is said to have approached him to ask why he was wearing earrings and nail polish.

– I then try to answer very pleasantly that it’s because I want to look good, that’s “swag”, and that’s cool, I think.

Shortly thereafter, the situation must have escalated. Shabani tried to escape.

Then another strange man must have come.

Shabani says he was placed in a chokehold before being put down.

– Then I thought that I had to do my best to stand up and defend myself. I saw that they would not stop.

Up to six people are said to have surrounded him. Eventually a friend of Shabani’s arrived. When he attempted to intervene, he is said to have received “two punches in the face”.

A little later the police arrived. Five of the six who Shabani says attacked him fled the scene, while one of them was arrested by police.

The violent incident took place in Oslo’s Youngstorget on Sunday night. The photo was taken in August of this year.

Investigate the case

Police confirm they are investigating a violent incident in Youngstorget on Sunday night.

– The investigation is in an early stage and at the moment we cannot say anything more about the number of parties involved or what specific investigative steps will be taken, writes police lawyer Anders Lafton Briskodden in an email to NRK.

The case is coded as serious bodily injury.

Massive response

Shabani has been on the 71 Degrees North team before, has a popular podcast, and will be seen soon this year’s Christmas calendar on NRK.

On Tuesday he posted a post on Instagram where he recounted what he experienced returning home from the city on Sunday night.

The post received over 30,000 likes and several thousand supportive comments.

– Just knowing that there are people out there who care about you and worry that these things don’t happen helps a lot to get over the things that have happened, says Shabani.
