This layoff policy was announced directly by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy in his memo to employees. The layoffs will affect most employees across Amazon’s Store and People, Experience and Technology divisions The limitThursday (5/1/2023).
In e-mailAccording to him, Jassy said that employees affected by the layoffs would be notified starting January 18. He added that this information had to be publicly disclosed because one of the employees leaked it to the outside.
Amazon will provide support to employees affected by the layoffs, as well as provide severance pay, transitional health insurance benefits, and outside job placement support.
The number of employees who will be laid off is far higher than previously circulated rumors. In November of last year, New York Times reported that Amazon plans to cut about 10,000 jobs.
Amazonia it currently has around 1.5 million employees, including those working in warehouses and companies. The Jeff Bezos-created company is the second-largest employer in the United States after retail giant Walmart.
Amazon is one of the companies experiencing the greatest positive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many customers shopping in bulk on line. To meet booming demand, Amazon is doubling its logistics network and hiring hundreds of thousands of employees.
However, in recent months, Amazonia starting to prepare for slower growth as inflation forces businesses and consumers to cut spending. They also began streamlining several teams and schedules in the division hardware and service.
Amazon’s layoffs are the largest ever by a tech company. Previously, Meta announced it would lay off about 11,000 employees.
